Department of Energy Announces Expansion of Smart Manufacturing Innovation Centers to Accelerate Adoption of Smart Manufacturing Technologies
|
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in partnership with the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Institute (CESMII), announced selections for four new Smart Manufacturing Innovation Centers (SMICs) bringing the total to eight SMICs. Through specialized training and direct industry engagement, the centers will help U.S. manufacturers implement smart manufacturing technologies to optimize their use of energy and materials.s.

Reinventing the Factory Stack for Industry 4.0
|
Industry 4.0 is many things; Middleware, Analytics, Cloud, Additive, IOT Communications and much more. The greatest challenge in the adoption of these new technologies, primarily revolves around two things, education and implementation costs. Of the two, implementation costs are the greatest barrier. It just costs too much to layer advanced analytics (and other Industry 4.0 technologies) onto an existing infrastructure. This is where CESMII comes in.

Capturing Data from Manufacturing Equipment, Old and New

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hosts a Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC), a regional extension of the national Manufacturing USA and Department of Energy-supported smart manufacturing initiative known as CESMII. The CESMII SMIC at Rensselaer is currently engaged in a project with industry partner Toward Zero to collect operational manufacturing process data from a broad variety of manufacturing equipment and make it available by way of a single seamless interface.
