US-German Digital Product Passport Demonstration

Recently, there has been growing recognition of the critical importance of supply chain resilience and carbon/GHG tracking and reporting on a global scale. Addressing these global challenges necessitates robust solutions that enhance internationally coordinated efforts. The concept of a Digital Product Passport (DPP) plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal, particularly for manufacturers in supply chains that sell products to consumers in Europe.

Motivated by these global business needs, Plattform Industrie 4.0 and its US partner CESMII – The Smart Manufacturing Institute (CESMII), along with Labs Network Industrie 4.0 (LNI 4.0) and the ZVEI, developed a joint demonstrator.

Organizing Data for Real-Time Manufacturing Insights

There has been a growing interest in Smart Manufacturing techniques including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to automate routine decisions, enhance process performance and coordinate supply chain activities. This has resulted in a strong demand for quality data. Manufacturers understand that the insights generated by these new analytical methods are only as good as the data they use.

The technology to collect and organize real-time production data for Smart Manufacturing techniques is available today. However, organizing and contextualizing this data is essential for effective mining and analysis, surpassing its initial use for process control or regulatory compliance. It is crucial that the raw data is stored with additional contextual data and organized using standardized operational level information models for advanced analysis. To achieve this, a Smart Manufacturing information foundation can use a data mesh or data fabric architecture.

Building an Inclusive Manufacturing Talent Pipeline

“Nose presses” is not an official metric of workforce recruiting success for the Penn State Digital Foundry on 5th Avenue in New Kensington, PA, but it is hugely symbolic in the quest to expand the manufacturing talent pipeline in underserved communities, according to Sherri McCleary, the Executive Director of the foundry.

A nose presser is a passerby who stops to press their face up against a window to see what is going on inside, says McCleary. The facility is one of seven CESMII Smart Manufacturing Innovation Centers around the country. The Digital Foundry demonstrates new technology to local manufacturers and offers training to current workforce and potential hires. It is located in New Kensington, a community about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, but it serves the greater region.
