This year’s ARC Industry Forum Americas was full of engaging conversations and knowledge sharing as we as an industry continue our pursuit of industrial transformation. If you missed Cognite, we had sessions from Celanese, B.Braun, and PGS, each sharing how they use Cognite Data Fusion® to be the industrial data foundation to improve their operations.
Listening to end-user presentations, hearing their challenges in conversations, and seeing demonstrations across a variety of industrial vendors, the following three themes emerged: Openness and interoperability of solutions, “Bring intelligence to operators like a pilot”, Begin projects with scale in mind.

Metaverse and the New Manufacturing Workforce
CESMII‘s Conrad Leiva says there’s no need to wait for a metaverse to realize a lot of value with digital transformation and smart manufacturing technologies.
“It’s easy to get fascinated with the potential of future technologies, but we don’t want to forget that right now there are a lot of opportunities to implement Smart Manufacturing technologies that are available today.”

Starting From Scratch with Smart Manufacturing
March 23rd – Virtual Event
A recent Machine Design survey found that less than 25% of manufacturers currently are implementing a smart manufacturing strategy. Those who start today on the smart manufacturing journey will achieve a competitive advantage and will achieve cost, safety and productivity gains. The big question remains: Where do I start? An expert from CESMII, the public/private national consortium dedicated to helping manufacturers take the digital transformation journey, will discuss the way to start small and gain incremental improvements while laying the groundwork for a deeper digital transformation.

Workforce Gap Analysis Survey Request
We are supporting a Workforce Gap Analysis being performed by Productive Resources for a DoD funded initiative. The data from the survey will be shared with CESMII and will inform our workforce development initiatives. The survey takes 5-8 mins to complete. Please note that many of the Smart Manufacturing skills have been lumped into the “Industry 4.0” category in this survey. But it will be good to see how all the different skill areas rate in interest among manufacturers today.

Using Smart Manufacturing to Enable Energy-Efficient Manufacturing of Pharmaceutical Products:
There is significant market opportunity for the development of SM based platforms to produce pharmaceutical dosage forms such as tablets/capsules. Regulatory authorities such as the U.S FDA have mandated that manufacturing be based more on science-based understanding and data-based analytics compared to the traditional manufacturing practices based on heuristics.
This project by Rutgers University and its Pharma Industry Collaborators developed and integrated SM Platform tools (Information and predictive models) to improve the energy productivity and reduce energy intensity of a pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing via wet granulation (WG), through a combination of advanced modeling, sensing and analytical methods.
The solution established advanced process models that combined both process/product output and energy metrics for both batch and continuous wet granulation processes. Secondly, different front-end tools for data collection, model construction and result visualization were integrated together into the developed front-end-back-end framework, where the information could be communicated from front-end to the back-end MATLAB scripts for further analysis and simulation, and the simulation results pushed to front-end for visualization. This connection included table extension architecture interfaces, process parameter selection, and optimization results. The framework can be applied to both batch and continuous processes. Thirdly, Rutgers team performed process optimization to reach a significant reduction in energy consumption while keeping the product capacity and quality within specified ranges for both batch and continuous cases. Moreover, these Cross-cutting innovations could directly be adapted to other manufacturing industries like biologics, food, specialty chemicals, etc. for overall energy and cost savings.
|
|
The direct results obtained by this project included the following:
1. Energy reduction from batch to continuous process of 25.6 % (~$28K/Yr/Line)
2. Energy reduction from batch to optimized batch process of 71.1% (~$78K/Yr/Line)
3. Energy reduction from batch to optimized continuous process of 83.3% (~ 83.3% (~$91K/Yr/Line)
4. Yield improvements, ~82-96.5% for batch and ~64-86% for continuous process

New technologies are rapidly revolutionizing smart manufacturing with implications for industry, government, and the American workforce. CESMII is honored to join the National Academies for a series of three workshops to study the state of the art in smart manufacturing technology; workforce, education and training needs; and the broader impacts for the U.S. economy and national competitiveness.
This is a study informed by but intended to consider SM beyond the charters of the Manufacturing USA Institutes. During these workshops, participants will explore a wide range of impacts that smart manufacturing could have on industry, the U.S. economy, and the environment. You are invited to register and attend the workshops virtually or in person and/or provide comments to the study.
